The L Word: Where are they Now?

The L word

Call it boredom.  Call it a much needed night in, which well, caused boredom.  Call it wine.  WHATEVER it was, something caused me to go through my DVD collection in an effort to find something to watch.  As I skimmed over Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and Love Actually, the allure of a hefty box in it's bright pink case captured my attention.  “Hmmm…” I thought.  “I wonder if this is still actually any good?” And that's when I committed: I was going to re-watch Season 1 of The L Word.

It felt like revisiting with old friends. Ok, maybe that’s a stretch. BUT, because I hadn’t watched it in years—years in which I’ve dated more and more girls and come more and more out of the closet— it was GREAT.  Bette and Tina pre-baby and affairs.  Dana and Jenny before their untimely deaths. Alice before Tasha. Shane with longer hair in all leather outfits- before Carmen.  (Sarah Shahi. I love you. I watch USA because of you.)  By the time I finished the first disc I started to wonder what happened to these lovely ladies.

Here's my  Where Are They Now L Word Edition:

Bette Porter (Jennifer Beals):  When Jen isn’t out spending her Flashdance royalties, you can find her in various box-office films such as The Grudge 2, and playing Mila Kunis’ mom in The Book of Eli.  She tried TV again with a Fox show - The Chicago Code - where she played Chicago's first female police superintendent.  Unfortunately for the lovely Ms. Beals, they cancelled it after one season. (American Idol, on the other hand, has been on for 25 bazillion years.)

Kit Porter (Pam Grier):  In a nutshell, being FIERCE and relishing in the fact that while she rocked our socks as Kit, she is the ORIGINAAAAL Jackie Brown.  Post-L Word, she played Agent Amanda Waller in The WB’s Smallville, and well, that’s about it.  We still love you gurl.

Shane McKutcheon (Katherine Moennig):  Ohhhh Kate Moennig.  How the mighty have fallen.  While being able to play some small roles in some big films, she hasn’t been up to much.  She did play Dr. Miranda Foster on the CBS drama Three Rivers, but well, that shit was cancelled because it was- umm…bad.  (I started watching it on purpose, then just to see if she regained her ability to actually act.)  She was also on an episode of Dexter but I’m guessing that isn’t paying many of the bills.  In order to cheer us all up over this depressing news here are a few fun facts on Kate:  Her cousin is Gwyneth Paltrow, anddddd comes from a family of violin makers. Viola!

Uh Huh Her

Alice Pieszecki (Leisha Hailey):  GURL you KNOW what the lovely Leisha Hailey is doing.  She’s rocking the hell out with her lovely partner, Camila Grey, in their band Uh Huh Her and trying to not get kicked off of any more Southwest Flights.  She also starred in 2 CSI episodes while starring in the L Word and has played a variety of voices on Fox’s American Dad.  Oh yeah:  She also appears in Yoplait Yogurt commercials.

Dana Fairbanks (Erin Daniels):  Basically doing what everyone else on this show is now doing:  Starring as multiple characters on multiple versions of CSI and Dexter, as well as on my new favorite and secretly gay as hell show:  Rizzoli & Isles.  Erin:  if you are reading this, I was sad they killed you.

Jenny Schecter (Mia Kirshner):  Probably trying to remember how many times Kiefer Sutherland said “Trust” during her time on Fox’s hit show 24 before she starred in The L Word.  Kidddddddinnnggg …She’s actually not doing too shabby and has recently joined the cast of the show Defiance on SyFy (P.S: does anyone else ever wonder why they changed the spelling of that channel?)

Tina Kennard (Laurel Holloman):   Not a damn thing.  At least not professionally.

Helena Peabody (Rachel Shelley):  Has done something unforgivable:  She played a recurring role in what can only be described as the worst show ever made, The Ghost Whisperer.  Luckily BBC took pity on her and cast her in a recurring role on Casualty—another hospital drama—as Superintendent Yvonne Rippon.

Carmen de la Pica Morales (Sarah Shahi):   Being the love of my life.  But besides that, she chose not to renew her contract with the L Word and her character was essentially written out after the almost-wedding episode. Carmen never reappeared.  She then went on to star in the second season of NBC’s Life and is now playing the amazing, adorable, Kate Reed in USA’s Fairly Legal.

Shane & Carmen : The Ending.

Tasha Williams (Rose Rollins):  Also starred in an episode of CSI:NY  before going on to star as the lead in the NBC show Chase, where she played the character Daisy Ogbaa.  Unfortunately, even executive producer Jerry Bruckheimer couldn’t save this show and it was cancelled after only one season.

Daniela Sea (Max Sweeny):  Rockin’ out in her band, starring as one of the leads in a new movie The Casserole Club, and trying to forget that they made her date Jenny while on the show.

Marina Ferrer (Karina Lombard):  Other than still thinking about her smoochies with the then long-haired and lovely Brad Pitt in Legends in the Fall, you can find her in reruns of FX’s Rescue Me.   Or on every version of CSI because apparently when you play a character on the original version in 2007 then don’t mind you playing a totally different character on CSI: NY in 2011.  And she also starred in 16 episodes on USA’s The 4400 (which proves my theory that USA LOVES gay people)And she killed Jenny.  At least, I think she did.

So there you have it!  I hope you all feel caught up and should I hear anything about them doing a reunion show you will be the FIRST to know.

Was it Marina?
