Sundays Just Got a Whole Lot Easier.

OverEasy preview flyer

Ah, Sunday. A day so full of potential, yet so often wasted on household chores, homework, or—for the Amy Winehouse disciples among us—liver repair. We at Where The Girls Go don’t believe in letting a single moment of the weekend go to waste, especially now that the oozing heat of D.C. summer has girls all over the city digging their cutoffs and A-shirts out of hibernation. Kick off your summer sunny-side-up with the first of our monthly OverEasy tea dances, a series of delicious Sunday confections lovingly crafted with your weekend delight in mind. WTGG is teaming up with dj vANNIEty kills this Sunday, May 20, at Dodge City for a dance bash featuring guest DJs Natty Boom of Anthology of Booty fame and She.Rex’s Junebullet. With drink specials starting at $3 and six types of sausages on the grill (including a veg option—it is a lesbian party, after all),...

Schmekel Brooklyn’s 100% Trans Jew Punk-klezmerish Band Plays DC Sunday

Sch1

Schmekel, who bills themselves as Brooklyn’s “only 100% transgender, 100% Jewish, schtick-rock sensation!” is gracing the stage of Chief Ikes this Sunday night as part of the DC Jewish Community Center’s 13th Annual Jewish Music Festival. If the name sounds familiar it might be because The New York Times did a write up about Schmekel –yes, meaning “small penis” in Yiddish—this past November. The boys, Ricky, Nogga, Lucian and Simcha have been playing together for two “fruitfully fruity” years. According to Times their music is an eclectic mix of “Bar-Mitzvah buffet of punk, klezmer, jazz, rock and polka influences” but the boys decribe themselves “simply” as a punk-klezmerish comedy band. But Lucian breaks it down more: “We play original songs about trans, queer, and Jewish experiences.” In fact, their DC show will feature lots of new songs, notes Ricky. Schmekel takes having fun seriously, as their name might suggest, Lucian...

Miss Representation in DC Tonight

miss-representation

Tonight the GALA Hispanic Theater will host the DC premier of Miss Representation- a documentary that focuses on the under-representation of women in positions of power, and the role media often plays in supporting a specific view of women. The 2011 film, written and directed by Jennifer Siebel Newsom- actress turned activist—is being brought to DC by the women-owned communications company, Start Somewhere. Newsom interviewed a large array of female politicians, journalists, entertainers, activists and academics including Condoleezza Rice, Rachel Maddow, Margaret Cho, and Rosario Dawson.  The goal of Miss Representation, according to the film's website, was to "challenge the media’s limited and often disparaging portrayals of women and girls, which make it difficult for women to achieve leadership positions and for the average woman to feel powerful herself." The documentary was part of 2011's Sundance Film Festival and also aired on the Oprah Winfrey Network. “I saw the movie last year and...

DJ MIM puts some spring in your step

DJ MIM (Pic by D.A. Jacobs) 2

If there’s one thing that DC’s queer girl community doesn’t lack for is awesome DJs, and DJ MIM is no exception. MIM, who’s been working as a professional DJ for nearly four years now, has loved music ever since she was a kid, idolizing Salt-N-Pepa’s DJ Spinderella. “She was the first female DJ I ever saw, and I wanted to be her,” says the DC native. “I scratched on my first record at the age of 8.” And she still prefers turntables to laptops today. Today she prides herself on being a versatile DJ. Her setlists often include multiple genres of music, including Hip-Hop, Dancehall, Moombahton, and Techno. “I like to mix it up because I’ve always been very passionate about music!” Together with her partner-in-crime—aka her wife, Marisol—they’ve created MimSol Entertainment. “We have monthly parties, happy hours, and other specialty events that support LGBTQ women, as well as women's organizations,”...

FRIDAY, MAY 4 It’s Friday, keep it questionably wholesome with Game Parlor—LGBT Game Night at Science Club, presented by ZOOM Urban Lesbian Excursions. Right on. Let’s play strip Stratego. Afterwards, head on over and get weird at DC9 for the inimitable Liberation Dance Party. Do they still have that video screen for text requests? Real talk-- has anyone ever been able to remember any details after a night at Liberation? At any rate, you'll find me there... furiously requesting Klymaxx’s “Meeting in the Ladies Room,” if you know...

OKC Me For Guidance

OKC

There comes a time in most of our lives where we find ourselves various types of “single”.  I say various because your level of comfort with your current relationship status can come with a hodgepodge of emotional states including jubilation, loneliness, and indifference.  I just happen to be one of these single people, and more specifically, a single lesbian in DC. And hence, I find myself drawn to the common outlet for new interactions of the flirtatious sort.  That’s right ladies, I’m talking about OkCupid. It all starts with a profile and that pivotal moment where you decide whether you're going to check the box straight, bisexual, or gay.  For some of this “check” is quite simple and we do it without hesitation.  We do it while wondering who thought to set the default word they tell you to add to your username if it isn’t available as: TACO.  (Yes,...

Queer Clothing Sans Rainbows by Proud Threads

mohawks-CU-final

If I were to ask you to think of “LGBT Clothing” I’d bet money that images of rainbows (and maybe unicorns) would flash through your head. Well, times they are a-changin. For the past year Sarah Moecker and Misty Branch have been designing, producing, and selling t-shirts under the company name Proud Threads. Moecker, the designer of “all things PT” refers to herself as the “Art Guru,” while Branch calls herself the “Chief Pantologist.” But the two cofounders wear many hats in the role of managing a company that is receiving national and international attention. The pair recently did an interview with Curve Magazine as well. Though the online store was officially launched in May of 2011, Branch says Proud Threads really began the year before. “We took business classes and started brainstorming ideas for designs to put on shirts,” she explains. “We spent a lot of time determining what...

From the grown’n’sexy to the all-ages grimy, here is a list of essential “shit to do” this week brought to you by WTGG's newest contributor, local DJ & Mary Christ front woman ALEX DB! THURSDAY, APRIL 26: Over on H St., maniacal journeying geniuses Quintron and Miss Pussycat grace Red Palace with their collective presence, delivering noisy, avant-garde sounds that are as much a science project as they are synthy, "Swamp-Tech" masterpieces. Hopefully Drum Buddy will be in tow. They are joined by D.C.’s own Heavy Breathing (mysterious drone sample-core) and ice-cold post-punkers Lenorable (whose recent release The Prince EP is melting my heart). If you’re looking to show off your finely-honed dancing skills (we’ve seen your questionably-coordinated ass at Chief Ike’s) while sampling from a world-class beer list and saving yourself cash (no cover!) head over to Dodge City for REVOLVER: Nuns with Guns Edition. DJs WolfBlister, Dianamatic, and...
